The Boy and the Heron just released its very first trailer teaser and announced that the American release date is December 8. But here’s the twist, though: Unexpectedly, they didn’t make a huge deal about it before the July 14 premiere, which took place in Japan. To tease everyone, they just displayed a cool image. Recently, GKIDS, the company releasing the film in North America, teased us as well with a teaser, but it didn’t feature any movie sequences. Just so you know, last month they released a few pictures from the film. By the way, check out the teaser below!

The film will have its international premiere on September 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023 for those who can’t wait. Then, on September 22, it will make its debut in Europe at the 71st San Sebastian Festival in Spain. Finally, it will be screened for American audiences at the 61st New York Film Festival, which begins on September 29 and runs through October 15.

The Boy and the Heron, which is frequently recognized as Miyazaki’s final film, was written by him. The tune was created by his longtime collaborator, Joe Hisaishi, a composer. The theme song for the movie, “Spinning Globe,” was sung by Kenshi Yonezu.

The voice cast includes:

  • Soma Santoki as Mahito
  • Masaki Suda as the Blue Heron/Heron Man
  • Ko Shibasaki as Kiriko
  • Aimyon as Himi
  • Yoshino Kimura as Natusko
  • Takuya Kimura as Shoichi
  • Shinobu Otake as Aiko
  • Keiko Takeshita as Izumi
  • Jun Fubuki as Utako
  • Sawako Agawa as Eriko
  • Karen Takizawa as Warawara
  • Jun Kunimura as the Great King of the Parrots
  • Kaoru Kobayashi as the Old Pelican

The 1937 novel “How Do You Live?” serves as the basis for this film. But don’t assume that it is a direct copy of that book. But Miyazaki loves that book a lot. And here’s what Barnes and Noble says it’s about:

“How Do You Live?” is like two stories in one. First, there’s Copper, a fifteen-year-old dealing with big changes after his dad dies, and he has to face some hard truths, like being betrayed by his best friend. In between Copper’s story bits, his uncle writes to him in a journal, giving him advice on life’s tough questions as Copper starts to bump into them. Through the story, Copper looks at the stars and uses what he learns about space, Earth, and people to figure out how to live.
