Kusunoki no Bannin, an anime film is now officially announced with a premiere date set for 2026. This news was confirmed by the production team through an announcement post on Twitter on April 8, 2025, at 7 AM JST.
What is Kusunoki no Bannin?
For those unfamiliar, Kusunoki no Bannin is a critically acclaimed novel by the renowned Japanese mystery author Keigo Higashino. Released in 2020, the book quickly gained traction and has since sold over a million copies across the world. Its Thrilling plot, rich characters, and emotional depth have made it a favorite among readers and now it’s set to reach the anime adaptation.
The animation of Kusunoki no Bannin is being handled by A-1 Pictures, a well-known studio worked on some highly popular anime like Solo Leveling, Sword Art Online, Erased, The Millionaire Detective – Balance: UNLIMITED etc. The announcement also revealed that the film will be helmed by director Tomohiko Ito. With such a seasoned director at the helm, expectations are understandably high.
As part of the announcement, a teaser visual was also unveiled. The image features a simple white background with a camphorwood tree in center. The story of Kusunoki no Bannin centers around Reito Naoi, a young man whose life takes a dramatic turn after he is got fired from his job. Consumed by anger and desperation, Reito ends up committing a crime, which leads to his arrest. In just a short span of time, his entire world begins to crumble. As he navigates the legal aftermath and appeals to an investigator, it seems all hope is lost.
However, just when things appear to be at their bleakest, a lawyer steps into the picture with an unexpected proposition. Instead of facing a lengthy prison sentence, Reito is offered an unusual opportunity: he can gain his freedom if he agrees to serve as the guardian of a sacred camphorwood tree.
Although confused and skeptical at first, Reito eventually accepts the offer and takes on his new role at the Tsugiko Shrine. As the tree’s guardian, he encounters a variety of people, each with their own unique stories and struggles. Through these interactions, Reito begins a journey of personal growth, redemption, and reflection, all while uncovering the deeper meaning behind his strange new position.
