The official Twitter account for the live-action movie adaptation of Makoto Ojiro’s manga “Insomniacs After School” (Kimi wa Hōkago Insomnia) released a short video clip from the film. The clip shows Isaki, Ganta, and their club advisor Kurashiki-sensei watching fireworks on the school’s rooftop. The scene was filmed in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, as part of the Nanao Port Festival, where 2,500 fireworks were displayed.
The movie will be released in Japan on June 23. The lead cast includes Nana Mori as Isaki Magari, Daiken Okudaira as Ganta Nakami. The film is directed by Chihiro Ikeda, and United Productions is planning and producing it, with distribution by Pony Canyon. The theme song for the film, titled “Yoake no Kimi e” (To You at Dawn), is performed by TOMOO.
Viz Media has licensed the manga and will release the second volume of the compiled book on June 20. The manga tells the story of two sleepless teenagers who find solace in the school’s astronomy observatory. Ganta Nakami, unable to sleep at night, becomes irritable and unpopular at school. He discovers that the observatory, previously used by the now-defunct astronomy club, is a perfect place for a nap. There, he meets Isaki Magari, and they both find comfort in each other while dealing with their insomnia.
The astronomy tower has been abandoned due to rumors about the fate of the previous astronomy club members. Ganta and Isaki decide to make it their secret spot for insomniacs. However, the school authorities cannot permit its unauthorized use. This leads them to consider starting a new astronomy club.
It has also inspired a television anime series that premiered on April 10 and is currently airing.
