Production I.G also animated the first two seasons of this romantic comedy series, along with all the special episodes. The first season of “Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You” premiered in the Fall of 2009, spanning 25 episodes and concluding in 2010. The 12-episode sequel followed in 2011.

This anime is based on the “Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You” manga, created by Karuho Shiina. The manga was serialized in Bessatsu Margaret from 2005 to 2017, comprising 123 chapters collected into 30 volumes. A light novel adaptation by Kanae Shimokawa, known for the novelization of the “Nana” series, ran from 2007 to 2015 under the Cobalt Bunko imprint, featuring illustrations by Shiina. Additionally, a spin-off story titled “Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You – Soulmate,” set after the events of the main manga, was serialized in Bessatsu Margaret from 2018 to 2022 and compiled into three volumes. A one-volume prequel novel, “Kimi ni Todoke: Ashita ni Nareba,” also by Shimokawa, exists and was published during Shiina’s maternity leave, temporarily pausing the main manga in Bessatsu Margaret.

Karuho Shiina expressed her excitement about the third season’s announcement and shared a special illustration: “I’m sure the return of the series after all this time is a pleasant surprise for those who enjoyed the anime back then. I was one of those people and was genuinely amazed and very, very happy. I had the opportunity to witness the post-recording, and Sawako remains Sawako, and Kazahaya remains Kazahaya. It’s hard to believe that over 10 years have passed, and I was deeply moved by the fantastic performances of the cast. The visuals are also adorable! The coherence of each episode is remarkable, so please join us once again to enjoy it!

Plot details for young readers:

Viz Media holds the manga license and describes the plot as follows: “Sawako Kuronuma seems like the perfect character for a horror movie. With her jet-black hair, sinister smile, and quiet demeanor, people often mistake her for Sadako from a scary movie. However, behind this scary appearance is a misunderstood teenager. Too timid to fit in, all she desires is to make friends. But when the most popular boy in class befriends her, she’ll not only make friends but also enemies!”

In 2010, a live-action movie based on the manga was released. Netflix and TV Tokyo collaborated on a new movie, which premiered in March. Netflix is also streaming the anime. You can watch the trailer below.
