The SAND LAND anime film is a highly anticipated adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s short manga series. Originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 2000, the manga consists of 14 chapters compiled into a single tankobon volume released in November of the same year.

The manga also gained popularity in North America, where it was serialized in Viz Media’s English Shonen Jump magazine in 2003, followed by the release of a volume in December of the same year.

The plot of the manga takes place in a future world known as Sand Land, where the only source of water comes from the overpriced water bottles controlled by a greedy king. Demons and humans coexist in this drought-stricken world until Sheriff Rao seeks the help of Beelzebub, a demon, to embark on a quest to find the Phantom Lake. This lake, supplied by birds called Water Finches, holds the key to solving the water crisis. Reluctantly, Beelzebub agrees to the journey and is accompanied by an older demon named Thief, as they work together for the well-being of all creatures, regardless of their demonic or human nature.
