Hey guys, what’s up? Did you know 2023 has been an amazing year for anime so far, and there’s even more excitement on the horizon. The fall anime season, which runs from October through December, is just around the corner, bringing with it some highly anticipated premieres and hidden gems.
We’ve been waiting for the anime adaptations of Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto and Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim, and they’re finally coming to Netflix. Plus, the final part of Attack on Titan’s last season is hitting Crunchyroll, and there are plenty of other cool releases like Spy x Family Season 2, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Under Ninja, and more.
We’ll keep updating this list as we learn more, but for now, here are some of the fall anime you should definitely be excited about.
PLUTO
Release date: Oct. 26
Where to watch: Netflix
The long-awaited anime based on Naoki Urasawa’s fantastic Pluto manga is almost here. It’s a passion project by legendary anime producer Masao Maruyama. This limited series follows Gesicht, a robot detective hunting down a serial killer who’s been targeting the world’s strongest robots. Expectations are high for this neo-noir sci-fi thriller, and it’s based on Osamu Tezuka’s iconic manga Astro Boy.
ATTACK ON TITAN FINAL SEASON: THE FINAL CHAPTERS SPECIAL 2
Release date: Nov. 4
Where to watch: Crunchyroll
The final, final chapter of Attack on Titan’s last season is almost here. With Eren’s decision to trigger the Rumbling and unleash the Colossal Titans, his former allies Mikasa and Armin face a tough choice: Kill Eren and stop the destruction, or let him build a new empire. We know how the manga ends, but the anime might have some surprises in store.
SPY X FAMILY (SEASON 2)
Release date: TBA
Where to watch: Crunchyroll
The Forger family is back this fall for another season following the success of Spy x Family’s premiere last year. This time, they’re adapting the Cruise Adventure Arc of Tatsuya Endo’s original manga. Assassin Yor takes an assignment to protect a client on the Princess Lorelai cruise ship, but things get complicated when Loid and Anya win tickets for the same ship. It sounds like a lot of trouble that could be solved with a simple conversation, but hey, it’s not easy being a secret agent or a clairvoyant little girl with a mean right hook.
SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF
Release date: Nov. 17
Where to watch: Netflix
Scott Pilgrim is back in anime form, 13 years after the movie adaptation. This time, it’s not a beat-for-beat adaptation of the graphic novel. The executive producer and co-writer promise something different. The entire cast from the 2010 film is returning to reprise their roles. It’s sure to be one of the season’s biggest anime premieres.
FLCL: GRUNGE
Release date: Sept. 9
Where to watch: Adult Swim, Max
Five years after FLCL: Progressive and FLCL: Alternative, FLCL: Grunge arrives with a new story of a teenage boy and the anarchic Haruko Haruhara. This time, it features 3DCG animation, which has received mixed reviews. We’ll have to see if it lives up to the original series’ legacy. Another series, FLCL: Shoegaze, is in production too.
PHOENIX: EDEN17
Release date: Sept. 13
Where to watch: TBA (likely Hulu)
Based on Osamu Tezuka’s unfinished fantasy manga, Phoenix: Eden17 tells the story of Romi and George fleeing Earth for the alien planet Eden17. When they find it lifeless, Romi embarks on a journey across space and time to reunite with her loved ones. It’s a beautiful tribute to one of anime’s pioneering creators.
FRIEREN: BEYOND JOURNEY’S END
Release date: Sept. 29 Where to watch: Crunchyroll
Ever wondered what happens to heroes after “happily ever after”? Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End explores that. Frieren, an elf mage, once joined heroes to defeat a demon king. Now, she’s on her own, reflecting on her past and friendships. It’s a tale of self-discovery.
KAMIERABI GOD.APP
Release date: Oct. 5
Where to watch: Crunchyroll
KamiErabi GOD.app is an original series by the director of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, the creator of Soul Eater and Fire Force, and the game designer behind Nier: Automata. It’s about young combatants known as “Influencers” battling for Godhood. If you liked Death Note, this might be up your alley.
UNDER NINJA
Release date: Oct. 5
Where to watch: TBA
This action comedy follows high school loner Kurō Kumogakure, who gets an unusual part-time job offer: become a modern-day ninja and complete international assassinations. He’ll meet other young assassins along the way, sometimes teaming up and sometimes fighting them. It’s based on the ongoing manga series by Kengo Hanazawa.
AKUMA-KUN
Release date: Nov. 9
Where to watch: Netflix
Akuma-kun is a supernatural comedy about Shingo “Akuma-kun” Umoregii, a fifth-grader with occult wisdom. He’s secretly the reincarnation of a child prodigy who seeks to create a strife-free world by summoning spirits and demons, which often leads to hilarious mishaps. If you enjoy the Addams Family or Jhonen Vasquez’s work, you’ll probably like this.
