One Piece Episode 1072 was released today, and it continued the exciting Gear 5 transformation trend. Right from the beginning, Kaido mentioned that Luffy’s newfound power must have awakened due to its influence on his surroundings, as is typical for a Paramecia fruit. However, the transformation is more in line with Zoan-type fruits, which confuses him. Since he and Luffy don’t know the real name of Luffy’s fruit, it’s understandable that he (Kaido) is surprised by the unexpected power-up provided by the Gum-Gum Fruit.
In an attempt to gain the upper hand, Kaido decides to swallow Luffy, but this plan backfires as Luffy playfully turns the tables on him. Yamato and Momo arrive on the rooftop to witness the bizarre scene of Kaido floating like a balloon. Luffy spots two lights, which turn out to be Kaido’s eyes. With a burst of imagination, Luffy extends his arms through the pupils and propels himself outside. Although it’s hard to fathom how Kaido recovers, Luffy manages to get outside and briefly display his new giant form.
After some playful antics, including Luffy using Kaido as a jump rope and Kaido using his Ragnarok attack to launch Luffy downwards, Luffy’s head bursts through the roof, revealing his transformed appearance to those below. Although this action seemed a bit repetitive, the inclusion of Kid and Law among the shocked faces brought a smile to my face. Their resilient camaraderie is endearing, as they refuse to back down before the other. Having already defeated a Yonko, it feels fitting for Luffy to follow suit.
Returning to the fight, Luffy loses his Gear 5 form and transforms into an old man due to the after-effects of the ability. A somewhat amusing moment occurs when Luffy exclaims, “I’m tired,” and Kaido responds with bewilderment, asking, “Who the hell are you?” This serves as a brief, lighthearted pause in the midst of the intense battle. The future Pirate King reflects on the names of Momo, Tama, Kin’emon, and Pedro, rekindling his determination and bringing about a powerful sequence.
Luffy challenges Kaido’s belief that he’s afraid of death, accompanied by the stirring melody of the “Overtaken” OST. He manages to rediscover the sound he sought, transforming back into Gear 5.
In Episode 1072 of ONE PIECE, this transformation is truly awe-inspiring, and Luffy returns to his playful antics. He skillfully adapts to Kaido’s attacks, nullifying them by using Conqueror’s Haki, running on his legs like wheels, and even flying like a helicopter. Eventually, he delivers a powerful blow that pierces through Kaido’s head, reveling in the exhilaration of the battle. Kaido once again questions Luffy’s identity, to which Luffy confidently responds that he is Monkey D. Luffy, the man destined to surpass Kaido and become the King of the Pirates. Meanwhile, Zunesha draws a parallel with Joyboy, emphasizing the profound connection between the two.
Review of One Piece Episode 1072
Alright, review time! This episode was seriously awesome follow up from the previous.
Like Kaido, I was also surprised that Luffy can give his surroundings rubbery properties, which represents the awakening of Paramythia fruits, while also going through physical change which represents Zoan types.
Never in a shonen fight I had so much fun and laugh in such a serious fight. We can tell that Luffy is still testing the limits of his absurdly hilarious, newfound power and having a lot of fun doing it. Like when he turned into a giant or using Kaido as a jump rope was such a disrespect for Kaido.
I had goosebumps as Luffy pictured all the important people he’s fighting for right now with overtaken playing in the background. Especially the mention of Pedro made it even better.
From there on the animation really went through the roof. I don’t know about others but I had a permanent grin on my face throughout the episode.
Imagine giving Kaido a mighty punch, knocking him down, and then comfortably using the ground next to him as a trampoline without any worries while figuring out how to name moves. This is something only Luffy can do.
The choice for the OST’s was spot on and animation especially in the second half when drums of liberation played, that was simply outstanding.
I’m really excited to see how the future episodes and how the fight continues!
